Grade 2-4-- A concise overview of Wisconsin's geography, history, and people. The small size and many full-color photographs, drawings, and maps make it easy to pick up and use. The information parallels entries found in most encyclopedias, and is no more in-depth. A pronunciation guide and sections presenting facts at a glance and biographical sketches of famous Wisconsinites round out the narrative. A very limited historical timeline covers the period from 10,000 b.c. when Native Americans began moving into the state, to 1946, when Joseph McCarthy was elected to the U. S. Senate. A final chapter on protecting the environment lends to the text's timeliness. Allan Carpenter's Wisconsin (1978) is more attractive and more challenging than this volume, and Dennis Fradin's Wisconsin in Words and Pictures (1977, both Childrens) is a bit more lively. A serviceable, but far from outstanding, offering. --Anna DeWind, Milwaukee Public Library
