In this journal, the author describes his year-long walking adventures at the Soldiers Delight Natural Environment Area, a rare prairie remnant just seven miles northwest of Baltimore, Maryland. In his quest to make this wild place his “natural home” throughout the course of four distinct seasons, Wennerstrom examines and contemplates rocks and minerals, plants, animals, prairies, floodplains, woodlands, lakes, ponds, pastures, mines and mills, Indian artifacts, as well as local legends and folklore.

Signed, with comment, on the Pitt Series in Nature and Natural History page. Jack Wennerstrom, a writer, teacher, and naturalist, was born in Evanston, Illinois in 1948 and died in 2013. He received a B.A. in 1970, taught high-school English, Humanities, and World Literature, and wrote his first novel, THE WAYSIDE OF DREAMS, in 1978. In the '80s he began writing for outdoor and nature magazines, including Bird-Watcher's Digest, where he became a Contributing Editor in 1990. His first book, SOLDIERS DELIGHT JOURNAL, about a globally-rare prairie ecosystem outside Baltimore, was published in 1995. He was President of BioTrek Naturalists from 2002 to 2006. Jack Wennerstrom wrote this book to raise the profile of the special beauty of wild places, and also because he believes that wild places, while shrinking, are more numerous than many think. He deliberately sought out the everyday in nature, as he describes his year-long walking adventures at the Soldiers delight Natural environment Area, a globally rare prairie remnant just seven miles northwest of Baltimore, Maryland. In his quest to make this wild place his 'natural home' throughout the course of four distinct seasons, Wennerstrom examines and contemplates rocks and minerals, plants, animals, prairies, floodplains, woodlands, lakes, ponds, pastures, mines and mills, Indian artifacts, local legend and folklore. All are the objects of his scrutiny, and the private, yet shared and lovingly translated, psalms of his spirit and soul. Presumed First Paperback Edition and presumed first printing.
