The Golden Age of American poster design was brief but brilliant, calling on the talents of the best-known artists of the day. The heyday of the poster was the last decade of the 19th century, when the poster came into its own as the perfect advertising medium, touting plays, periodicals, patent medicines, and a vast array of newfangled manufactured goods from bicycles to dynamite. The American poster artists and their work are brought together in this lavishly illustrated volume. Some of the pioneers of American graphic design who contributed to the American poster renaissance are Bradley, Penfield, Parrish, Leyendecker, Gibson, Sloan, Bird, Bragdon, Carqueville, Gould, Hazenplug, Mayer, Nankivell, Reed, Rhead, and Woodbury, to name just a few. During the 1890s posters proliferated in book-sellers' stalls, in theaters, and on walls from one end of the country to the other. The quality of poster design was at its peak, incorporating all the newest and most exiting new directions in art. Equally important, public appreciation of poster art developed so quickly it launched a poster-collecting spree amounting to a mania. This book offers a vivid look at this short-lived phenomenon. Contents: Introduction, European Origins, Posters in America, Styles and Artists, The Patrons, Epilog, Plates: Mass Magazines, Little Magazines, Books, Newspapers Commerce and Exhibitions, Biographies, Acknowledgments, Illustration Credits, and Bibliography.
