Dan Cruickshank, formerly the editor of Architects' Journal and Perspectives magazine, is the author of London: The Art of Georgian Buildings and several other books. A writer and presenter on BBC television's One Foot in the Past, he lives in England.
Ten prominent architecture experts take a greatest-hits approach to defining the major movements in Western architectural styles, technologies, and philosophies. Proceeding chronologically from classical Greek and Roman temples through the Romanesque and Gothic eras on to the Renaissance, the baroque, neoclassicism, fin de siecle, and two phases of modernism, editor Cruickshank's contributors highlight 150 structures, many of which will be new to readers, while even the most familiar are rendered fresh by lucent essays that avoid the technical and focus on the human. Sharp and beautifully lit photographs document churches, libraries, castles, schools, and museums by architects forgotten and renowned, the latter including Michelangelo, Henry Aldrich, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Antoni Gaudi, Frank Lloyd Wright, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and Frank Gehry. At once the most obvious and most easily taken-for-granted manifestation of civilization, architecture is often chronicled in narratives dense with insider's jargon. The architectural historians gathered here, including Robin Francis Rhodes, Robert Harbison, Gavin Stamp, and Diane Ghirardo, bring a more generous passion to their work and a respect for clear writing.
