• Interactive introduction to 6 famous artists: Vincent van Gogh, Edvard Munch, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Vassily Kandinsky,
Willem de Kooning, and Jackson Pollock
• Hands-on approach to understanding
great art
• Parents and teachers need Art Explorers—ideal for homeschoolers, too!
The Art Explorers series offers a new approach to art, encouraging kids to interpret what they see in famous artworks, then try the techniques themselves. Express Yourself!: Activities and Adventures in Expressionism, the third book in the series, draws children into the compelling, dramatic world of expressionism by highlighting the work of six famous artists. From modern expressionists (Van Gogh, Munch) to German expressionists (Kirchner, Kandinsky) to abstract expressionists (De Kooning, Pollock), each artist is represented by a famous artwork, paired with questions to get kids thinking about what they see. Easy-to-follow activities provide hands-on experience with the artist’s techniques, subject, and mediums, each illustrated with examples by real kids. Packed with great art and ideas, Express Yourself! lets kids understand art—and become artists themselves.

Joyce Raimondo, the author of Imagine That!: Activities and Adventures in
Surrealism and Picture This!: Activities and Adventures in Impressionism, was the family programs coordinator at
The Museum of Modern Art in New York for eight years. She lives in New York.
Grade 1-5–This title captures the essence of Expressionism with examples of work by renowned artists Munch, van Gogh, Kirchner, Kandinsky, de Kooning, and Pollock; illustrated step-by-step projects; a statement on the genre; a text that stimulates thinking by asking questions; and generous examples of student art. Projects inspired by Kandinsky, for example, include creating an abstract work that conveys emotion with cut-paper shapes and paint. The books strength lies in its organization and attractive, brightly colored presentation of art as self-discovery. Activities promote individuality, while the biographies of the artists highlight their techniques. Lists of materials, kid-friendly instructions, and notes to adults and children are included. An excellent addition to art sections and a helpful teaching aid.–Mary Elam, Forman Elementary School, Plano, TX

Gr. 3-5.^B This third offering in the Art Explorers series focuses on six expressionist painters (Edvard Munch, Vincent van Gogh, Ernest Ludwig Kirchner, Vasily Kandinsky, Willem de Kooning, and Jackson Pollack) and their work. For each artist Raimondo introduces a representative painting, offers an interpretation and a discussion of techniques, and provides two related projects suitable for children, which build on the artists' methods. Projects, ranging from drawing and painting to sculpture and collage, highlight important artistic elements such as mood, lines, color, movement, and shape. The layout is particularly attractive, with crisp, full-color photos and drawings set against brightly colored borders; the text and captions are easy to read. Introduced with a note for adults and appended with short biographies of the artists, this book will be welcomed by teachers, parents, and would-be artists. Kay Weisman
