Review:
All artists should surround themselves with inspiring images, and WWW.Animation offers an in-depth look at contemporary animation on the Internet guaranteed to inspire any Web designer. From simple animation used in advertising banners to more sophisticated episodic shows that run for 20 minutes or more, this book teaches and inspires digital animators by showing off and reviewing a wide assortment of high-quality work.

Three major sections define the book, outlining the direction and history of animation, the past and present technologies used, and--the lion's share of the book--a glossy showcase that highlights the most prominent and well animated sites on the Internet. We're taken on a refreshing tour of what makes these sites work, with the focus not on tools but rather on design and content. Many of the sites employ simple techniques but use sophisticated images, resulting in very engaging animation.

The production of the book leaves little room for improvement; each page is printed in glossy color and filled with an equal amount of screenshots and text. The studied projects are culled from a global selection, and the styles vary widely, ranging from the contemporary cartoon look of Wildbrain.com to the elegant and ethereal site of David Bowie (Davidbowie.com). The only way to take a book like this one step further would be to supply the source and project files on CD, but then again, the purpose of this book is to inspire innovation, not imitation. --Mike Caputo

From Library Journal:
Chapman's enthusiasm for online animation's potential is apparent, and her focus on creating successful graphics within current technological limitations is especially welcome. In addition to describing a variety of web animation software from Flash to QuickTime VR, she furnishes an extensive full-color showcase of animated web sites that illustrate what each tool can accomplish. Public libraries needing an overview to supplement guides on specific animation software packages should acquire.
