Grade 3-5-Every day Vince, the class bully, forces Jonathan, the new kid on the block, to give him his lunch money. On top of that, Jonathan is bitten by Charlemagne, his neighbor's poodle. He begins to feel strange, and finally realizes that he turns into a werepoodle at night. He must gnaw on a wolfbane chewbone that is in the clutches of a mean dog in order to become a normal human again. In the end, Vince, too, becomes a werepoodle, but Jonathan saves him, and they become friends. This book is an easy read, but the plot is predictable. The dialogue is forced, and character development is slight. The exciting climactic scene, in which Jonathan, Charlemagne, and Vince's dog sneak into the grocery store, steal a steak, and barter it for the magical chewbone, saves the book from total mediocrity. Hiser's mild tale, illustrated with occasional full-page, black-and-white pictures, is for readers who enjoy short chapter books. It will certainly not cause nightmares.

Gr. 2-4. Fourth-grader Jonathan has enough troubles--a new school, a bully who steals his lunch money--before his neighbor's poodle bites him and he begins turning into a werepoodle. The neighbor, who turns out to be a magician, and the poodle (a former mailman) help Jonathan find the wolfbane dog chew that will return him to his furless boyhood. After a canine raid on the supermarket meat counter, Jonathan is finally cured--and the school bully is on his way to poodlehood. Not as funny as James Howe's fiction, but funny and fast enough to reward struggling readers looking for a good story in short-chapter bursts. Mary Harris Veeder
