About the Author:
Kathleen Krull (born 1952) is an author of children's books. Krull studied English at Lawrence University in Wisconsin. After graduation she worked as a children's book editor in the Midwest. While editing for different publishers, she learned about the industry and wrote books as an in-house author. After a decade of editorial work, Krull moved to San Diego and eventually settled into her new career as a children's book author. In 2004, Krull won a Jane Addams Children's Book Award in the Picture Book category for Harvesting Hope: The Story of Cesar Chavez with illustrator Yuyi Morales.
From School Library Journal:
Grades 1-3--This bit of whimsy inspired by a composition Krull wrote in elementary school captures her youthful exuberance but lacks the polish of her collective biographies or Wilma Unlimited (Harcourt, 1996). Of the three stories, "Kevin's Hair Scare" is most successful as it seizes the essence of a boy's first haircut with all its fear, mystery, and humor. It has great read-aloud potential. "Ramon's Screamingly Bad Hair Day" is a rambling collection of scary hair stories with a weak ending; the child decides after a night of nightmares that his tresses could scare the monster in his dreams. "Helen's Book of Dos" peeks at possible coifs for girls, boys, parents, and teachers, and other weird styles for aliens, dogs, or trees. Some of the examples seem a bit dated, but the dog and tree coiffures are entertaining. Brewer's vibrant cartoon illustrations enhance and occasionally surpass the text with great wit and a wild palette of colors. The final gathering of facts, "Some Hair Dos and Don'ts," satisfies Krull's urge to inform as well as entertain. Hair fascination is as popular now as ever in history so this light but lively offering could be a worthwhile addition to libraries.
