Two fifteen-year-olds, Rosie and Asher, upset over the various unhappy circumstances of their lives in the Australian city of Perth, decide to run away, in a tale that explores the emotional roller coaster of adolescence.

Brigid Lowry is the author of award-winning poetry, short stories, and young adult novels. She is well known in Australia, where Guitar Highway Rose was a runaway success with young readers and a finalist for or winner of numerous prestigious awards. She spent much of her life in Australia but now lives in New Zealand, where she was born and raised.
Good girl Rosie and her new "bad boy" friend, Asher, who has dreadlocks and loves Jim Morrison, decide to hitchhike up the coast of Australia, where they take up with a hippie family. This novel is structured around quirky vignettes by a multitude of characters. The format does not translate well to the spoken word in this case. While Kate Hosking differentiates the characters well, the story's frequent and abrupt shifts in point of view make it extremely difficult to follow the plot. A sweet, romantic examination of teen angst is too broken up to be coherent. The biography of the author at the beginning of the story is the most listenable aspect of this production.
