Clad in a red jumpsuit that gives him the look of the Flash, Fireboy is a superhero intent on keeping the world’s children safe from fire. After heralding all the great things fire can do (marshmallows! birthday candles!), the cut paper–style artwork bursts into reds and yellows and oranges as all manners of things—including homes—catch aflame. The instructions can be a little overwhelming, especially when it comes to sealing yourself in from a house fire. And the safety tours through a living room and kitchen, while accurate, make both environments seem rather menacing. But the snazzy presentation is entertaining in its own right, from the Pow!-shaped safety tips (“Don’t ever call 911 if it’s not an emergency”) to the wonderful cutaways showing a fire station and a home-escape plan. Even the old saw, “stop, drop, and roll,” gets new life in an eye-catching two-page spread featuring Fireboy whirling through the air to snuff out his smoking cape. Some of the especially vital details (fire alarms, extinguishers) are incorporated as photos. Grades K-2. --Daniel Kraus
