Wilber, Wendell, Willy, Walter, and Woody really know how to put on a show. Five hilarious ducks juggle pies—SPLAT; spin plates—CRASH; and show off their magic box—WOWEE! Their slapstick routine is also a math lesson. They introduce the concepts greater than, less than, and equal to, as well as addition and subtraction. All the while, students will be laughing so much, they won't even realize that they are learning. A page for teachers and parents explains exactly how the book meets the Common Core State Standards (K.CC. 6-7) and (K.OA. 1-5).

Ethan Long's first book about the Wing Wing brothers, The Wing Wing Brothers Math Spectacular!, was called "painless, comical, and yes, spectacular" in a starred review from Kirkus Reviews. Publishers Weekly said of the second in the series, The Wing Wing Brothers Carnival de Math, "Long makes each concept clear in his comics-style panels." He lives with his family in Florida.
K-Gr 1-The Wing Wing Brothers put on quite a show. In three acts, these goofy birds spin plates, juggle, toss pies, disappear and reappear via a magic box, and still have time for a fart joke. Between all the high jinks, lessons are taught about greater than, less than, equal to, and addition and subtraction that, according to the concluding paragraph, meet the Common Core State Standards for kindergarten mathematics in counting, cardinality, and operations in algebraic thinking. The text uses words, numbers, and mathematical symbols to show the various concepts. The action-packed, thoroughly cartoony illustrations clearly depict the concepts. Meet the lovable Wing Wing Brothers, five comical, costumed characters with bird features as well as human ones (birdlike feet, humanoid arms, birdlike beaks, gleaming teeth). Their three-act stage show includes two brothers engaged in competitive plate-juggling, one brother juggling pies, and all five mysteriously disappearing into and reappearing from a large box. All these activities lend themselves to mathematical expressions that change to reflect events in the stories. Throughout the book, mathematical symbols such as >, <, +, -, and = are used. The text and illustrations combine to make their meanings easier to grasp. Created in pencil and digitally colored, Long’s zany illustrations use cartoon-style panels to tell the three little stories, each ending in a climax featuring broad humor. With a final-page note on how the book meets Common Core State Standards for kindergarten mathematics, this lively picture book has a practical purpose as well as a well-developed sense of fun.
