Reviews

Edited by two respected psychoanalysts, this compendium is the first volume of a comprehensive series exploring human growth. Originally published in 1980 in three volumes, it has apparently been updated or revised chapter by chapter. Volume 1 still includes papers by classic theorists like Anna Freud and Erik Erikson and scholarly tracts by more modern researchers. But it also offers new contributions, such as Stanley I. Greenspan's "Development of the Ego," John Bowlby's "Role of Attachment in Personality Development," and W. Ernest Freud's "Prenatal Attachment." Because of the series' high price tag, many public libraries won't be able to justify the expenditure--especially since the three forthcoming volumes will only take readers through adolescence. For strong psychology/psychiatry collections.
