Grade 8-12-- Aimed at the hi/lo audience, this title attempts to define and convey practical and specific applications of the topic at hand. The attractive, uncluttered format features a clear, large typeface and a generous assortment of black-and-white and full-color photographs. Morality is approached in a forthright and in teresting manner that encourages both self- evaluation and critical thought. Several fiction alized scenarios are presented for readers to examine and to facilitate personal decision making. Discussions focus on determining right and wrong, skirting the issues of situa tional ethics, extrinsic and intrinsic teachers, a look at different religious points of view, and a brief introduction to the moral philosphies of Locke and Rousseau and the psychological the ories of Piaget and Kohlberg. Lengthier exami nations are provided on the stages of moral development and how they come together to influence choices. Susan Terkel's Ethics (Lode star, 1992) delves into the topic in more depth. Steins provides a gentle and convincing nudge toward socially accepted involvement and be havior that leaves the decision making power with readers and clarifies the resultant conse quences. --Celia A.
