Grade 7-12-- A mix of short stories and essays, all of which explore the world of work. The selections are by such award-winning authors as Czeslaw Milosz and Doris Lessing as well as lesser-known writers, and bring together quality writing that might be otherwise overlooked by many teen readers. Experiences range from the drudgery of women's work in a former Soviet Republic to the boredom of the assembly line in an automobile plant. A retelling of the Mayan myth about how work came into the world is accompanied by a photo essay. Most useful for classroom discussions on multiculturalism, but an excellent book for any collection. --Jo-Anne Weinberg, Greenburgh Public Library, NY
