Gr 7 Up--These two titles offer information not usually available for this age level. Hurwitz explains budgeting clearly, with charts and pictures, and uses good examples to show both the techniques and how important it is to plan expenditures in order to achieve short- and long-term goals. Negotiating skills are vital to surviving in the adult world. Simpson shows how to develop appropriate strategies and demonstrates, by example, their usefulness in school, at home, and at work. Techniques, such as defining the problem and seeking a fair solution, take practice and Simpson provides excellent suggestions and advice on developing these abilities. The format is open, with large print and plenty of white space. Good-quality black-and-white and full-color photos appear throughout, but are more decorative than informative. Adult literacy programs may also find these titles helpful.
