Gr 6 Up-After a quick definition of learning disabilities and how they are assessed, this volume addresses practical matters. Before students identified as learning disabled are placed in a program, they must have an "Individualized Educational Program" or IEP. This program is briefly explained and alternative placements and services are described. The text suggests ways of coping at school and getting along with others and includes a number of fictionalized case studies. The last chapter notes that learning disabilities can be a lifelong challenge and offers advice on how to make the transition from high school to college or a career. Advice on getting help is found throughout and specific organizations are listed at the end of the book. The large print and black-and-white and full-color photographs add to the reader-friendly appearance. This is a good introduction to the subject but, because of its brevity, it may not answer all of the questions readers might have. Kay Marie Porterfield's Straight Talk about Learning Disabilities (Facts On File, 1999) gives a more complete discussion of the topic.-Martha Gordon, formerly at South Salem Library, NY
