Grade 5-9-This book appears at first glance to be written for young audiences, since Alagna defines words such as "segregation," "stillborn," and "quartet." However, there are many terms that aren't defined, and the author assumes her readers will know the films The Maltese Falcon and Casablanca, and be familiar with the '60s music scene. The book features lots of flashy colors (some pages are pink) and large print, short paragraphs and summary heads, and many exclamation points and fact boxes. The black-and-white photos are standard; they've been seen often in other sources. The nefarious Col. Tom Parker is credited as the main reason for the musician's extraordinary rise to fame, but never criticized for his later infamous mismanagement of Elvis's career. The seamier side of the King's life has also been considerably watered down. Alagna tries to make it sound as if poor ol' Elvis just didn't know what all those gosh darn drugs were and believed he needed the "medicine" his doctors prescribed for him, although a number of other biographies have mentioned his fascination with and in-depth knowledge of pharmaceuticals. Barry Denenberg's All Shook Up (Scholastic, 2001) does a better job of presenting a balanced view of the celebrity. James D. Torr's Elvis Presley (Greenhaven, 2001), a collection of essays on the performer's life, though geared for an older audience, is far superior.
