Reviewed with Allison Stark Draper's The Assassination of Malcolm X.
Gr. 6-10. There's no exploitation in these biographies in the Library of Political Assassinations series, which move from the violent headlines to an overview of the roles these African American leaders took during the Civil Rights Movement. The focus is on the politics that made the men targets for murder. Ribeiro, one of the first to write about Evers for a YA audience, does a good job of introducing the inspiring leader and the cause he fought for. As in Chris Crowe's novel about Emmett Till, above, the segregated society, the racist killer, and the trial are an integral part of the story. Malcolm X has been the subject of several YA books, but Draper confronts the important issues with exceptional candor and clarity, including the ongoing controversy of who ordered the murder. There are numerous photos, and each book has a glossary, a chronology, and a bibliography, but no footnotes. Hazel Rochman

Grade 5-8 These titles focus on killings that resulted from racial hatred during the American civil rights activities in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Offering minimal biographical information, the books start with a description of the assassination, the immediate aftermath, and the effect of the murders on the families. Subsequent chapters discuss each man's early life and the influences that formed his adult beliefs. The formation of the beliefs of Byron De La Beckwith (Evers's assassin) is also discussed. Details of legal actions and trials concerning the cases are included along with information about the aftereffects on American society. Illustrated with black-and-white and color photographs, including some graphic pictures, and containing fact boxes and time lines, these books may supplement research. -Elizabeth Stumpf, Clearfield Middle School, PA
