Reviewed with Laurie Krebs' A Day in the Life of a Colonial Sailmaker.
Gr. 2-3. These entries in the Library of Living and Working in Colonial Times series combine fact and fiction to introduce eighteenth-century figures and trades. In Colonial Doctor, Benjamin Rush calls on a patient, visits an apothecary ("From a jar of leeches, or blood-sucking worms, he selected several fat ones"), then returns home. In between, topical spreads offer basic information on medical practices of the time, Rush's training and career, and related topics. Similarly, in sailmaker, as James Forten walks to his shop and back, readers learn details of the craft. Both books are illustrated with period, or at least old, pictures. Children not yet up to Tunis' Colonial Craftsmen and the Beginnings of American Industry (1976) or titles in Leonard Everett Fisher's Colonial American Craftsmen series will find these valuable for early-grade history, science, or biography studies.
