First edition. This companion volume to Gravell and Miller's A Catalogue of American Watermarks, 1690-1835presents 788 watermarks from foreign-made paper actually used in America. It is important to note that until 1775 most fine paper used by Americans was imported from Europe, indeed foreign-made paper was preferred until the mid-1800's. Thus, this book is essential for the study of American historical manuscripts. A new, distortion-free technique, developed by Gravell, was used to accurately reproduce the watermarks photographically. Each watermark is photographed with a scale-size indicator. Watermarks can be important in establishing approximate dates for undated manuscripts; Gravell and Miller show that approximately 95% of the paper they examined was used within six years of the date of manufacture. Two appendices concern a rare surviving Excise List of English paper manufacturers from 1816 which is here published for the first time. The book is indexed by watermark subject, proper name, and papermill. xix, 286 pages. cloth.. 4to..
