Approaching the subject from the perspectives of parish priests, nuns, and parishoners, the contributors to this volume analyze the historical changes in American Catholic parishes from 1930 to today. What has transpired during this tumultuous era represents a sea change for all concerned with the parish as an institution, and the analysis provided here is clearheaded and fair. An underlying assumption is that the genie cannot be put back into the bottle by stern admonitions from Rome, especially since Vatican Council II was a major catalyst in the events under discussion. Individual parish and convent documents and personal interviews play major roles in the discussion. Potentially of interest to general readers.
