About the Author
Andrew Attaway is a senior editor at Guideposts Books. This is his 14th year as the editor of Daily Guideposts. He and his wife, Julia, live with their five children in New York City.

Dad found the perfect spot for himself this year on our beach vacation, at the end of the boardwalk in front of our twoweek rental. He sat in his walker, his floppy hat on, a section of unread newspaper in his hands, and all those who passed by wished him good morning or stopped to chat. Some he knew; most were strangers, walkers and joggers doing the loop along the boardwalk. I went out to sit with him.
“They all like to touch the end,” he said, speaking slowly, “either with their foot or their hand.” It was as though they were in some race and had to touch the end of the old sun-bleached boardwalk for their mileage to count.
“What do you think about, sitting here?” I asked.
“Not much,” he said. “There’s too much to watch.” There were the boats on the water, just visible over the sand; the waves rolling in; the swimmers treading out; and the runners and walkers marking their progress with the quick slap of a hand on the boardwalk wall. I left Dad in his spot in the sun. He’s lived a long, wonderful life and seemed especially glad to have his children and grandchildren close by for these two weeks. I watched him give the boardwalk a gentle tap as though he’d just completed a run. Then he stood up in his walker and came inside to join the family.
