Grade 3 - 5-- An informal, easy - to-read introduction to the stars, the sun, and the constellations. Falling between a picture-book format and a slightly more complex treatment such as E. C. Krupp's The Big Dipper and You (Morrow, 1989), the Bergers' text simplifies and explains complicated concepts. The title question is answered with a good comparison to watching movies in a dark theater and having the pictures "disappear" when someone opens a door and lets in light. Hydrogen atoms, the planets, constellations, the Milky Way, and more are illustrated in lively, full-color cartoon drawings. There are no chapter divisions, the questions posed are not set off in the text, and the answers do not always immediately follow. Nevertheless, it's a readable addition. --Frances E.
