The Scottish born and educated physician who entertained readers in two earlier books ( One Man's Medicine and A View of the Mountains ) offers the third in a series on his life's adventures. Gibson begins with spirited recollections of his student and military days, sketches in his first practice in the Yorkshire Dales, then recounts his family's emigration to a small town in Western Canada, where he set up a new practice. In a pleasant, unsophisticated style, Gibson writes about his patients, colleagues, neighbors, and the harsh, majestic wilderness he grew to love. Occasionally the vignettes suffer from contrived endings. Unquestionably the author is best at describing medical cases, and, amid a bit of philosophizing on hypnosis and home births, there are some worthy nuggets here to entertain and touch the reader.
