Two award-winning authors team up to tell a moving story of hope in this full-color gift book. Pastor Allen sold his heirloom Bible to help his congregation. Colleen Reece was born and raised in a small Washington logging town. She is a best-selling author with over 3 million copies of her books sold. She has twice been voted the Heartsong Presents' Favorite Author and later was the first author inducted into Heartsong Hall of Fame. Her keen interest in people, plus extensive camping trips throughout the western states with her tight-knit family provided a solid foundation for her family oriented books enjoyed by many ages.
Julie Reece-DeMarco is a multi-published, award-winning author and a practicing attorney, who lives with her husband and children in Washington state. In addition to her practice, she volunteers her legal services to teach youth about upholding the law and alternative dispute resolution.
The Great Depression of 1929 has closed bank doors and forced people out of work, paralyzing many parts of the country. The tiny mountain town of Spruce Hollow, North Carolina, hasn't escaped its crippling grip
When Thanksgiving arrives, Pastor David Allen looks over his faithful congregation, wondering how families with holes in their shoes and no food to put on the table can be thankful during this holiday season. But David has no idea how God will use him to give hope to those in the Hollow and beyond.
This touching novella, with shades of Catherine Marshall's "Christy" and O. Henry's "The Gift," compensates for its somewhat clumsy prose by engaging the reader's heartstrings. Rev. David Allen, a preacher in a North Carolina mountain town during the Depression, feels overwhelmed by the poverty of his parishioners. One Christmas, he sells his only valuable possession, a rare heirloom Bible to buy shoes for the children in his church. But by the following Christmas, harsh conditions remain the same, and he despairs that his sacrifice has made no lasting difference. Then a letter arrives to tell him his old Bible has begun a ministry all its own. As the Bible makes its way across the country, seven strangers write to David (whose name and address were written inside the Bible's cover) to explain how its message has transformed them. It's a tender story, despite a pedestrian writing style and a few linguistic anachronisms.
