Matthew C. Williams is associate professor of undergraduate studies in biblical studies at Talbot School of Theology. He is the coauthor of The Synoptic Gospels and the author of "The Case for Markan Priority" in The Synoptic Problem: 3 Views to Gospel Origins (Kregel 2003).
The origins of the Synoptic Gospels—Matthew, Mark, and Luke—have been the subject of study and speculation since the second century. In recent years, however, discussion has come to a standstill with little hard evidence being offered. A fresh approach to the debate, Two Gospels From One examines the Synoptic Problem by using principles of textual criticism. Widely researched and clearly presented, it promises to be an important contribution to New Testament studies and a major work to be considered by readers interested in the relationship between and origins of the first three Gospels.
“Matthew Williams has not only offered an explanation, he has proposed a method—textual criticism—that has within it the secret to resolving the Synoptic Problem on as objective grounds as we are likely to find. Highly recommended, and a severe challenge for alternative theories.”
—Scot McKnight, Karl A. Olsson Professor in Religious Studies, North Park University
“Williams brings clarity to the discussion and a wealth of carefully presented examples that are exegetically and contextually well considered. Two Gospels From One offers many new insights and is must reading for all concerned with the question of how the Synoptic Gospels relate to one another. I recommend the book enthusiastically.”
—Craig A. Evans, Payzant Distinguished Professor of New Testament Studies, Acadia Divinity College
“This work by Matthew Williams provides a much-needed new approach to the Synoptic Problem that is innovative and quite convincing. Every student of the Gospels should read this important book.”
—Grant R. Osborne, Professor of New Testament, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School
