Review
Subtitled ""Scale Exercises in All Major and Minor Keys for Daily Study,"" it is a comprehensive method for practicing scales (rather than a scale book, per se) focusing primarily on the left hand and aimed at rather advanced players. Boettcher eliminated fingered octaves and some other non-cellistic material and added a concluding artificial harmonic exercise for each key. He suggests various fingerings (some allowing for extending the exercises to a four-octave range) and warns the user that some sections require large stretches of the hand. The 133 pages are organized into 244 sections by keys ordered in the circle of fifths (with alternative bowings distributed across the section). --American String Teacher, November 2004
