"An unusually comprehensive yet focused treatment of the concepts, issues, and challenges of contemporary nursing. The contributors bring a multinational perspective to the dialogue about professional nursing, honoring our past and advancing our future." -- Jacqueline Fawcett, Ph.D, FAAN, Professor, College of Nursing and Health Sciences University of Massachusetts Boston
"The conception of this book by John Daly is brilliant. "Professional Nursing: Concepts, Issues, and Challenges" is written for an American audience, and brings a fresh view to the multiple challenges nursing faces here in the United States and elsewhere. Equally appropriate for novice as well as experienced readers, the perspectives presented are international while being relevant locally. Whether readers are seeking illumination on nursing science, nursing practice or health care issues, they will find it in these pages. The book is engaging at every level, and represents professional nursing effectively to nursing professionals, and is a great read for non-nurses as well. The assembly of authors, in equal numbers from the United States and Australia, with a few from elsewhere, is impressive. Their contributions have been rendered cohesive by the overall vision that the Editor has brought to the task, and hang together as a skilled conductor makes different players of an orchestra bring forth a symphony. I recommend the book with enthusiasm." --Shaké Ketefian, EdD, RN, FAAN, Professor; Director of International Affairs, University of Michigan, School of Nursing
"As President of The Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International, I have had the privilege and unique opportunity to witness cross-cultural similarities and differences in professional nursing in countries around the world. While there is great diversity in nursing there is also a transcendent unity in nursing values, beliefs and service-practice commitments to the health and wellbeing of people served. During my Presidency I have come to realize that the Honor Society is really a transnational organization that has aspirations to be global. One of the things that will help nurses develop a global consciousness is cross-cultural learning and professional dialogue. This text is a major contribution to the development of a global nursing consciousness. This effort requires cross-cultural learning and conversations about professional nursing identity and evolution of the discipline. The authors who contributed to this text provide rich insights and creative ways to stimulate the professional dialogue necessary for solidifying the identity and advancing the vision and value of nursing through out the world.
Through the profession of nursing nurse are connected and interdependent on each other. Such interdependence is enhanced when we devote time, and attention to cultural learning that transcends the local gravity of our own spheres of influences and awakens a more global consciousness in regard to professional issues, obstacle, challenges and frames of reference. This text edited by John Daly, Sandra Speedy, Debra Jackson, and Vickie and Clinton Lambert, provides insights, and information about professional issues that are similar and different across cultural contexts. The text is a cultural learning resource about professional nursing issues that support cultural understanding in the context of our disciplinary evolution." -- Daniel J. Pesut PhD RN APRN BC FAAN Professor and Department Chairperson
