This book provides an integrative analysis of new advances in patient education, and the current state of the field. Written by one of patient education's foremost experts, the book focuses on the following important areas: learning theory; ethics; measurement & outcomes; preparation for self management of chronic disease; mode of delivery; and mental health. The growing importance of patient-centered care, and the large number of persons with one or more chronic diseases offers patient education the opportunity to grow as an independent and fundamental part of the health care system.

"Barbara Redman again shows her mettle by presenting some of the most confounding issues surrounding the teaching-learning process, issues which have not been directly addressed before. Education for self-care should be our goal, but how successfully can this be accomplished as the medical model persists? How much psychoeducation is done as depression, anxiety disorders, and a host of other neurotic and psychotic conditions escalate in frequency, but decline in reimbursability? The Internet is an inevitable presence in patient education, but how can it be converted into a valuable adjunct in teaching? These are but a few of the very contemporary questions which Barbara Redman broaches in this publication. I suggest that Advances in Patient Education should be required reading for every graduate student in nursing." - Lucille A. Joel, RN, EdD, FAAN Professor Rutgers -The State University of New Jersey
