Essays discuss the publishing industry, literary biography, the works of underappreciated writers, and literature as a guide to the past

In essays and reviews of different lengths, novelist-poet-critic Garrett first deplores the politics and self-serving timidity of today's (New York) publishing establishment. Then, in prose discursive and unpretentiously erudite, he examines writers who have been unfairly denied star status. Except for a savage review of Norman Podhoretz's Making It (1968), these refreshingly independent-minded pieces celebrate daring, honest writing wherever Garrett finds it--in the past (novelist Mary Johnston, who died in 1936), as well as in the present (Shelby Foote, Fred Chappell, Reynolds Price, and others, mostly Southern). A lively collection.
