May's book is not so much a poetics as a sort of poem. Poetry is an appropriate medium for this deeply personal meditation on death and resurrection, which is an incarnation of May's encounter with a piece of wisdom spoken by her grandmother, that "a body knows." Like Jacob at Jabbok, to whom she refers more than once in the book, May experiences her encounter with the wisdom of those words as a wrestling match with God. She understands her own writing as a manifestation of the wrestling, and this makes the book an excellent example of how to practice a "theopoetics" of resurrection, "theopoetics" being an appropriate descriptive label because it refers equally to creativity and to God. God is the subject, but the poem is theology to the extent that the words it speaks about God are the poet's words. Steve Schroeder
