BERNICE E. CULLINAN is Professor Emeritus at New York University and past president of the International Reading Association. She is the author or editor of over 30 books including co-author of Literature and the Child (fifth edition), as well as co-editor of The Continuum Encyclopedia of Children's Literature, published in 2001, with a trade edition issued in 2003. She lives in New York City. Diane Goetz Person, Ph.D, is the co-editor of The Continuum Encyclopedia of Children's Literature as well as the author of several books on using children's literature in the classroom. A children's librarian and a professor of education at Long Island University, she was a member of the 2003 Newbery Committee, and serves on several other committees of the American Library Association and the International Reading Association.
From Booklist:
Cullinan, past president of the International Reading Association and the Reading Hall of Fame and author of the acclaimed Literature and the Child (now in its fifth edition), and librarian and children's literature authority Person have accomplished the daunting task of putting together a complete reference source for children's literature. The Continuum Encyclopedia of Children's Literature is a valuable tool in the growing bibliography of secondary material on a genre that has gained a high level of academic as well as popular interest.

The encyclopedia surveys 150 years in the history of children's literature. Though coverage is global, emphasis is on English-speaking countries and works appearing in English translation. More than 150 contributors from librarianship, academia, publishing, writing, and illustration provided 1,200 biocritical entries and almost 100 topical articles that survey genres (Adventure stories, Easy-to-read books, Fairy tales), themes and trends (Death and dying in children's literature, Multicultural literature), and history (British literature, Caldecott Medal). Individuals who are treated were chosen "based on an evaluation of an author or illustrator's significant contribution to the field regardless of the amount of work written or published" and range from Hans Christian Andersen, Arthur Rackham, and Jules Verne to Kevin Henkes, Walter Dean Myers, and J. K. Rowling. Samples of illustrations and photographs of 130 authors and illustrators are included. The work is alphabetically arranged, and each entry includes a bibliography. In the case of authors or illustrators, a list of awards and further works is also included. All entries are well written and highlight the authors' or illustrators' lives and most-acclaimed works. Entries on genres discuss the genre's history, significance, and examples. The index lists only individuals and will not help researchers seeking out references to Booklist, Charlotte's Web, or Harry Potter.

This work would be useful for parents and teachers as well as scholars, librarians, and writers. It is well researched, well written, and easy to use. The Oxford Companion to Children's Literature (1984) has entries for titles and characters as well as authors, illustrators, and literary types but is not as up to date. International Companion Encyclopedia of Children's Literature (Routledge, 1996) has far fewer entries and a British focus. The Continuum Encyclopedia of Children's Literature is recommended for all libraries with holdings in children's literature. REVWR
