Reviews
Douroux recounts the life and boxing career of former light heavyweight champion Moore, whose 145 career knockouts still stands as a boxing record. Now in his late seventies, Moore remains active as heavyweight George Foreman's trainer and as a youth counselor in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, Douroux's treatment fails to humanize the man and establish his place in boxing history. Part of the problem is her cumbersome writing style. Secondly, she superficially sets Moore's life and boxing career within the social framework that existed during his lifetime. Finally, as a book essentially about a boxing champion, the descriptions of Moore's major bouts are sketchy at best. Boxing fans interested in Moore would be better off reading his own autobiography, The Archie Moore Story ( LJ 7/60).
