About the Author

Serge Ivanovitch Taneiev (1856-1915), pupil, friend, and critic of Tchaikovsky, succeeded the latter as pro-fessor of instrumentation at the Moscow Conservatory, followed Nicholas Rubinstein as chief professor of pi-anoforte. On Tchaikovsky's recommendation, he was made Director of the Conservatory in 1885. His works in-clude four symphonies; one opera, Oresteia; one cantata, John of Damascus; and works for chamber-music. His greatest contribution was in the field of the theory of composition; among his students were Rachmaninoff, Gliere, Scriabin, Siloti, Spendiaroff, Vassilenko and Sabaneiev
