Reviews

This is a companion volume to Harrison's comprehensive and superb Seabirds ( LJ 11/1/83), which offers full species accounts, 324 maps, and numerous color paintings. Handier for field use, the present title has an updated, briefer text, condensed species accounts, and smaller scale maps. The species accounts have sections on identification, habits, distribution, and similar species. A unique feature is a section of 764 color photos taken by 300 naturalists. Harrison's seabird definition is expansive, including not only truly pelagic petrels and shearwaters but also gulls, penguins, loons, pelicans, etc. Both books deserve wide use in academic and public libraries.
