I’m a jazz singer. I’ve spent 15 years of my professional life singing jazz in clubs and concert halls, at weddings and in studios, and very occasionally in church. I thought I was way too hip for something so antiquated as the rosary. No one could be more surprised than I am to find that I’ve written a book on it. Then again, no one was more surprised than I was to discover how effective the rosary is either. As unlikely as it seemed, I felt my own little annunciation in agreeing to this project. The rosary, quite frankly, rescued me, or rather brought me to the Rescuer. This was an experience I was anxious to share with anyone else who was struggling as I had been. Furthermore, I’d expended so much energy looking for the “right” meditation, the “right” kind of prayer outside of my own faith tradition, that I felt strongly impelled to remind other Catholics, especially younger Catholics who were not raised on rosary meditation, that they have an exceptional tool for meditation probably right under their noses, perhaps gathering dust somewhere in their sock drawer. And so I issue this suggestion to anyone looking for answers, companionship, comfort, deeper communion with God, a rest from fear or resentment: Pick up the rosary for just 30 days, even if you just say one decade a day, and see what happens. I believe you may be surprised to discover what treasures await you in those tiny, dusty beads.

About the Author

Liz Kelly is a jazz singer and a writer. Originally from Minnesota, she received an MFA in creative writing from the University of Alaska. She has published both fiction and nonfiction and has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize (2000) in fiction for her short story, “The Wind,” (published in the literary journal, Grain). Kelly has performed throughout the United States and Europe. Her video, Everything Must Change, has been featured on BET’s Jazz Central. She has also been a musical guest on EWTN’s Living His Life Abundantly with Johnnette Benkovic. She has released two CDs, It Seems to Me and Anima Christi and is featured on the Catholic Music Network.
