A Sixty-Year Legacy
Sixty years ago a handful of highly experienced grammar and writing teachers set out on a quest—to develop a curriculum for teaching English to immigrant children. They knew that language is critical to finding a place in the world. They knew that communication cannot be separated from critical thinking. They knew that fluency, creativity, communication, and elaboration cannot be successfully separated from grammar, mechanics, syntax, and semantics.
Today our eyes are filled with color television and computer graphics. Our minds are filled with ever-changing information. Our e-mails carry important news of business and too often serve as the only connection to our extended families. Still, as it was six decades ago, our first impression of a person’s skills and intelligence is firmly set in how well the person communicates—in conversation and in writing.
Voyages in English in the 21st Century
We at Loyola Press worked with the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Immaculata, Pennsylvania, the program authors, for two years to conceptualize this edition of Voyages in English. We realized that more than ever students and teachers need the values of the past to carry us all into the future. Through that collaboration, we forged this shared vision to
- uphold the strength and rigor of the original Voyages program,
- provide all students (and teachers) with proficiency in the foundations of grammar; and to provide the tools needed to master each writing genre, enabling them to communicate successfully with any audience, and
- reintegrate the writing process with its structural underpinnings at the word level, the sentence level, and the idea level (beyond the paragraph level).
Focus on Grammar
In every grade, growth in oral and written language skills is of paramount importance. Language is a vehicle for expressing wonder and delight, a tool for exchanging ideas, a medium for transmitting information, and a resource for bridging the differences among people. It is the underlying philosophy of Voyages in English to help students recognize these goals of language and to provide them with the skills to attain these goals.
Voyages in English includes the major areas of grammar: correct usage, mechanics, and dictionary skills. Each chapter incorporates a grammar concept with one of the following writing genres: personal narratives, friendly letters, how-to writing, descriptions, book reports, and research reports. For purposes of instruction, the grammar skills are often taught in isolation, but they should not be considered separate and distinct from one another.
Students at the primary level are just becoming acquainted with the tools of language. They are eager to express themselves orally and in written form. In these activities, spontaneity and creativity are encouraged. Grammar, correct usage, mechanics, and spelling are taught primarily to enhance the students’ oral and written expression. Becoming proficient in language is a process. As students mature, their knowledge and use of the language should mature as well.
Voyages in English will provide a foundation for the further development of language skills. A textbook, coupled with a teacher’s own love of language, is a vehicle for transmitting to the students an appreciation for the written word.
