Synopsis
Author Clement Welsh casts the act of preaching sermons in a psychological light, advancing through listening, perception and cognition to a "cognitive tuning" that informs one's sermons. Welsh places the work of Karl Barth at one extreme of preaching theory -- one of high-mindedness and education of the listener -- with the other extreme occupied by apologetics and liberal theology seeking to find relevance in scripture for modern lives. Welsh urges the reader to occupy other areas of the spectrum by implementing a psychological approach and applying this psychoanalytical listening to both one's self and one's congregants.
