Display devices are the mainstay of science, for without displays scientists could not easily make observations and interpret data. Author's fascination by the variety of forms that displays can have and how they can represent data inspired him to experiment with display systems capable of providing a clearer and more precise picture of reality. He was greatly inspired by the advent of the light-emitting diode and its cousin, the solid-state photodetector. The LED is the mystical 'cold light' spoken of in older science fiction stories, and this book grew directly out of an appreciation for the cold-light devices and the many other contemporary displays.
