James Emery White: First and foremost, it is built on the direct teaching of Jesus as to how we should pray. It is not simply a call to prayer, or a chronicle of one person's attempt at prayer; it is an investigation of what it means to pray the way Jesus taught. Surprisingly, there are very few books that explore this, yet to me, that exploration is everything. Second, I believe it is unique in that it uses that exploration to answer the most common questions people have--not only about prayer, but life with God. Because prayer is the crucible of our relationship with God, an understanding of prayer offers a lens into an understanding of God and our relationship with God. White: The biggest misconception is that prayer is a matter of words. In truth, it is about relationship. If it was simply about a set of words, or practices, then prayer could be approached as a competence to be mastered. Instead, it is deep calling to deep. This is why Jesus didn't teach anything about formulas or routines; he says nothing about days or times, postures or places, whether to stand or sit, kneel or lie down, have your eyes open or closed, talk in your head or out loud.
