Grade 5-8-- A loose chronology of discoveries in each field, these titles give a sense of the history of human achievement in the various sciences. Entries are brief but informative, relating names, dates, a bit of background, and, occasionally, some of the events leading up to a discovery. Anecdotes are minimal, but the facts are drawn together in a smooth, absorbing style. Most illustrations are line drawings with watercolor washes, accompanied by a smattering of full-color photographs. They depict scientists at work, body parts and system diagrams, and inventions. The Human Body outlines "breakthroughs" in anatomy, physiology, psychology; medicine and medical technology; procedures and replacement body parts. Many of the major discoveries are here, but there's no mention of analgesics. Inventions is rather broad in scope, grouping tools, fire, the steam engine, light bulb, laser, and robots under technology. Agriculture, cities, and space stations comprise the "breakthroughs in living modes" section. Other groupings incorporate innovations in transportation and communication.
