Reviews

Grade 4 Up-Originally published in England, this eye-catching book contains potentially confusing British terms. (Cardboard is called stencil card and posterboard is referred to as thin card or decorative corrugated card.) However, a helpful introduction offers clear, colorful pictures of and definitions for all of the materials and tools used. A section entitled "Techniques" presents directions and full-color photos to explain folding, scoring, curling, cutting, stenciling, sponging, printing, tracing, and making papier-mache. Templates are then given for creating some of the decorations, projects, and gift ideas that follow. Several of the activities become redundant and, while the pictures are clear, the written directions are at times sketchy. There are projects for all ages, but those geared to children will require much adult supervision. Safety reminders are abundant. Not a first choice, but an adequate addition.
