Arranged in alphabetical order, this compendium of photo essays focuses mostly on famous African American musicians, writers, dancers, politicians, and athletes, among others, who have made valuable contributions during their lifetime. It also profiles some lesser-known personalities like Sidney Bechet and Jupiter Hammon. The major luminaries include Hank Aaron, Marcus Garvey, Jessye Norman, Martin Luther King Jr., and Oprah Winfrey. This work has an easier-to-read format than Who's Who Among Black Americans, 1990/91 (LJ 5/15/90), which at $140 is very expensive and offers more unfamiliar names and no photos. For a similar take on this subject, see also George L. Lee's Interesting People: Black American History Makers (LJ 4/15/89), which has biographical sketches as well but is arranged chronologically with pen-and-ink drawings rather than photographs. Recommended for most reference and African American collections.?Ann Burns, "Library Journal"
