Lacquer is one of the glories of the Japanese craft tradition. Barbara Teri Okada has an M.A. in Japanese art history from Yale University and has studied lacquer in both the United States and Japan with such specialists as Charles A. Greenfield, the noted collector; Mizuuchi Kyohei, a gifted lacquer artisan and scholar; and Arakawa Hirokazu, former curator of the lacquer collection at the Tokyo National Museum.
