This second volume in Bowker's "Buying Guide" series provides critical reviews of 215 high school to adult level general reference books (and CD-ROM, online, and large print sources). For each work, criteria for evaluation are explicated and specialized terms defined. Reviews (from 600 to 5000 words) and tables contain an impressive amount of information clearly organized and accurately and objectively presented. Although its primary use will undoubtedly be for library collection development, reviews and a chapter on choosing reference books will benefit home selection. Some specialized guides (e.g., Kenneth Kister's Best Encyclopedias , LJ 5/15/84 and Kister's Atlas Buying Guide , LJ 11/15/86) cover more sources in a particular area; this work offers longer, more detailed reviews and greater facility in comparison. A valuable source for public, school, and academic libraries. Mary Jane Brustman, SUNY at Albany Libs.
