Now with greater emphasis on book talking, discussion, and other extension activities, Primaryplots 2 is your first step toward introducing young readers to the joy of books. Designed to assist in the selection of quality children's literature for public library programs and in elementary school libraries and classrooms, this edition profiles 150 picture books published between 1988 and 1992, ranging from alphabet and counting books to poetry and concept books.

This follows a 1989 edition, Primaryplots, by the same author, an elementary school librarian. Like its predecessor, it was developed as a selection aid for programs for children ages four to eight. It contains 150 titles, including alphabet, counting, poetry, and concept books, and provides information for booktalks, story programs, classroom activities, and reading guidance. Books profiled were published between 1988 and 1992 and selected for inclusion from standard reviewing and evaluation sources, including Booklist's "Editor's Choice," School Library Journal's "Best Books," the Association of Library Service to Children's "Notable Books," and the International Reading Association's "Children's Choices." Subject area lists and the 16th edition and supplements of Children's Catalog were also consulted. Responding to the whole-language philosophy of providing a literature-based curriculum, this edition offers a greater emphasis on integrating books into the classroom experience.
Books are arranged in the same eight categories as in the earlier edition, including Developing a Positive Self-Image, Learning about the World around You, Analyzing Illustrations, and Focusing on Folktales. Each entry has a concise plot summary, thematic notes, bibliographic detail, audiovisual adaptations, author/illustrator information, related titles, and suggested activities. Cumulative indexes access authors, illustrators, titles, and subjects from this volume and its predecessor.
Providing information for booktalking and curriculum development, this title is a good aid in the selection and use of high-quality literature for both public and elementary school libraries. Classroom teachers and children's librarians will benefit from this guide.
“Just about everyone working with children will find this an excellent choice, and it is essential for all school and public libraries.”–Library Journal
“... a well-balanced selection of the most original, memorable, and noteworthy picture books of recent years.”–School Library Journal
