This annotated bibliography recommends biographies and related books that provide information about nearly 300 people of historical interest and the time periods in which they lived. The entries are arranged alphabetically; a brief paragraph about the individual is followed by suggested titles for "Older Readers" (grades six to nine) and "Younger Readers" (grades three to five). The bibliographic information is complete and most of the titles have been published in the last 10 years. Sometimes there are curious omissions, e.g., Rhoda Blumberg's excellent The Remarkable Voyages of Captain Cook is not listed with the others mentioned for that explorer. In addition to title and author indexes, a chronological index helps to point out connections between the figures mentioned as well as the specific eras. A subject index relates those who made contributions in similar areas and those who are of similar backgrounds. Unfortunately, while there are 56 African Americans included, there are only two Hispanic Americans (and Roberto Clemente is incorrectly listed as Robert Clemente in the index) and no Asian Americans. Despite its limitations, this book is suitable for curriculum planning as well as for gathering materials for student use.-Edith Ching, St. Albans School, Mt. St. Alban, Washington, DC
