Much has been written about the high cost of health care today. In fact, many of the changes we have seen in the delivery of health care are in response to this problem. There has also been an increase in the cost of health care education. In the last few years, the cost of textbooks has been spiraling upward until today, textbooks are often the most expensive component in an educational program. We have talked to students and educators from all across the country who are struggling with a sluggish economy and overextended school systems. You told us that there was a desperate need for a comprehensive, affordable nursing assistant textbook. You have asked for relief, and we have heard you.

The author and a dedicated team at Prentice Hall Publishing have designed a textbook that both meets your needs scholastically and is cost-effective. In forging this new design we were determined not to sacrifice quality or content. The standards we set were rigorous. The book had to be well written, readable, and understandable. It had to be comprehensive and complete so that it could stand alone without the need for a student workbook. Knowing that "a picture is worth a thousand words," we decided to continue using the large number of photographs and illustrations that made the first edition so popular.

Essentials for Today's Nursing Assistant, Special Edition, focuses on health care as it is being practiced today. It incorporates recent changes in procedures and philosophies in diverse areas of the health care delivery system. Although this textbook presents new procedures using new equipment such as the tympanic thermometer, it includes tried-and-true practices that have not changed over the years. Our goal was to include procedures and practices that are used in the majority of health care facilities in the United States.

This edition of Essentials for Today's Nursing Assistant continues with the holistic, humanistic approach and restorative focus that was the unifying element of the first edition. The concern with meeting the needs of the whole person, physically and psychosocially, coincides with a national trend to provide this kind of care. In the multicultural world of today, respect for the individual has become a necessity. Restorative, holistic care has proven to be an effective tool in reducing health care costs and enhancing quality of life. The sooner we can return patients to independence and as nearly normal function as possible, the sooner they can get on with their lives.

Essentials for Today's Nursing Assistant, Special Edition, emphasizes the role of the nursing assistant in the delivery of quality health care. It stresses the importance of taking care of oneself and developing a professional attitude. It addresses the need for continuing education and identifies new directions nursing assistants can take to accomplish their own career goals.

The fact that no student workbook is required makes Essentials for Today's Nursing Assistant, Special Edition, an excellent and affordable choice. An Instructor's Guide containing teaching strategies, quizzes, quiz answer keys, and answer keys to end-of-chapter exercises is available for the convenience of instructors.

To The Student

You, the student, are the reason that authors write textbooks. You are the focus of our concern, the basis for our industry, and the light that guides our way. As an author, I have consistently tried to keep you at the center of this project. I have tried to write a book that will enable you to read and learn easily. My goal is to provide you with a textbook that will help you become a competent, compassionate nursing assistant. I sincerely hope this book meets that goal.

This edition of Essentials for Today's Nursing Assistant continues the tradition set by the first edition. It emphasizes the importance of the role of the nursing assistant in providing quality patient health care. It includes the latest information on safety issues such as infection control and emergency care. It contains procedures and guidelines that are used in the majority of health care facilities. Some of these procedures may not be used in your area, and some you may not be allowed to do. Your instructor will identify the procedures and guidelines that you will be required to learn.

As you begin your study, keep in mind these guides to finding materials in the text:

  • The table of contents tells you where specific information is located and in what order it is presented. All headings, procedures, and guidelines are listed with the appropriate page number for convenience.
  • The list of procedures contains all the procedures in the text for easy reference. Procedures are boxed for easy identification and illustrations are provided to demonstrate some of the steps.
  • Use the list of guidelines to locate a specific guideline. This list contains all of the guidelines presented in the text. Guidelines are also boxed and illustrated.
  • Read the objectives listed at the beginning of each chapter. Objectives are the goals you will be expected to reach. You will often find the objectives identified in the headings and subheadings. After completing the chapter, review the objectives and be sure that you have met all of them. If you have met the objectives, you should have a clear understanding of the material presented in the chapter.
  • Study the glossary at the beginning of each chapter. The glossary is a list of the key vocabulary words or terms introduced in the chapter. The terms are printed in italics in the text to make them easier to identify. The definition is provided in the same sentence. Knowledge of the vocabulary words or terms will help you to answer quiz questions correctly.
  • Read headings and subheadings to get a clear idea of the material provided in the chapter. Headings and subheadings are printed in large, boldfaced type that stands out from the rest of the text. Use the headings and subheadings to locate information needed to answer questions and meet objectives.
  • Study the illustrations and photographs to help you understand what the author is trying to say. Line drawings are used when they demonstrate procedural steps more clearly. Charts and tables are helpful to reinforce information.
  • Do the end-of-chapter exercises. The Review section uses thought-provoking fill-in-the-blank type questions. They are designed to help you review the glossary or vocabulary terms. The Remember section contains a list of the important points of the chapter. Read and study this list to help you remember the key issues. The Reflect section includes a case study and related questions that help you reflect on the issues and use the information you have learned. The Respond section contains multiple-choice questions that will help you learn the material and develop test-taking skills.
