Kindergarten-Grade 3-- Marabou mopes in the mud and envies the lovely flamingos and pelicans until a swallow tells him of a land where marabous are kings and queens. At Kilaguni, he finds respect and admiration from humans and marabous, but he still lacks something. After the wise swallow points out that "what other people think of you is not as important as what you think of yourself," Marabou at last learns to enjoy life. Reminiscent of the ugly duckling tale, especially since the main characters are birds, the story seeks to instruct more than to amuse. The cartoonlike illustrations do not mesh with the doses of self-improvement advice offered by the swallow. In fact, most of the dialogue sounds more formal than the rest of the narrative.
