Corkett's treatment of Bethune is balanced, covering the doctor's hot temper and heavy drinking as well as his courage and commitment. Courtney presents Baden-Powell as a flesh and blood hero and uses quotations from his books and speeches to enliven the portrait. Each title has a clear, concise, and sprightly written text that is richly illustrated with above-average black-and-white photographs, prints, and maps.
